Senate President announces members of the sports betting parliamentary commission

The President of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco announced this Tuesday (9) the names of some of the components of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) into sports betting, designed to investigate allegations and suspicions of manipulation of results in Brazilian football. They involve players, managers and betting companies. The creation of the CPI was requested by Senator Romário and the first meeting of the collegiate takes place today (10).

With the designation of the names of senators to compose the Parliamentary Sports Betting Inquiry Committee, the collegiate scheduled its first meeting for this Wednesday (10), at 9 am. On that occasion, the president and vice-president will be elected. From then on, the rapporteur can also be appointed.

To date, the senators defined as incumbents are:

  • Veneziano Vital do Rêgo (MDB-PB)
  • Marcio Bittar (União-AC)
  • Otto Alencar (PSD-BA)
  • Angelo Coronel (PSD-BA)
  • Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO)
  • Chico Rodrigues (PSB-RR)
  • Romário (PL-RJ)
  • Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE)

As substitutes, the following were announced:

  • Giordano (MDB-SP)
  • Efraim Filho (União-PB)
  • Sérgio Petecão (PSD-AC)
  • Carlos Portinho (PL-RJ)

According to the president of the Senate, the Aliança bloc, formed by PP and Republicans, has not yet nominated the names that will make up the Commission.

CPI

The CPI was requested by Senator Romário and will be composed of 11 full senators and 7 substitutes, lasting 180 days. In his request (RQS 158/2024), the senator states that sports betting currently generates a lot of money and that the possible enticement of players and managers to manipulate results could put the credibility of the games at risk.

“It is worth remembering that football is an important economic activity in our country, which generates tens of thousands of jobs and drives an important direct and indirect chain of income generation. It is, therefore, the duty of the State to regulate and supervise its activities, in the name of the public interest,” argued the senator.
