Senate Committee votes to ban celebrities from sports betting advertising

The Senate's Sports Committee (CEsp) may vote this Wednesday (10) on a project that prohibits the participation of celebrities in advertising betting on sporting events (Bill 3.405/2023). Presented by senator Eduardo Girão, the proposal has a favorable opinion from the rapporteur, Sérgio Petecão. The meeting starts at 10:30 am.

The text amends Law 14,790 of 2023, which regulated fixed-odd sports betting, known as ‘bets’ in Brazil. For Girão, the ban is a way of trying to protect ordinary citizens from possible emotional or financial harm that may result from the repeated practice of betting activities.

According to Bill 3,405/2023, sports teams, athletes, former athletes, presenters, commentators, celebrities and influencers are prohibited from participating in sports betting advertising, being subject to the application of penalties in case of non-compliance with the law.

“We understand that the parliamentary initiative to regulate the advertising of fixed-odd betting lotteries is legitimate and constitutional. The risks of gaming addiction are well known, which could become a public health problem in a scenario of deregulation of the activity,” points out the rapporteur in his opinion in favor of the ban.

The author of the proposal is a well-known opponent of any and all forms of gambling and was one of the opponents of the approval of Bill 14,790/2023, which regulated sports betting and iGaming in Brazil.

CEsp is chaired by Senator Romário, former star of the Brazilian nationat football team.
