The creation of the Permanent Subcommittee for Sports Betting Regulation was approved by the Sports Committee of the Chamber of Deputies at the end of April, and this Wednesday (22) the installation and election of the group's president will take place.
In his justification for the creation of the subcommittee, deputy Luciano Vieira (PL-RJ) highlighted that Brazil is a country passionate about football. “For this reason, sport is the most valued in the nation, generating billions of dollars annually. According to the CBF, football alone generates around 0.75% of the country's GDP. However, this market has suffered attacks that could compromise the credibility of the sport and demotivate Brazilian fans.”
For him, “it is essential to present new legislation that actively regulates sporting events. Brazilian fans need to be completely sure that the results of the matches are based exclusively on the technical capacity of the teams, leaving no doubt about bribes and manipulations.”
“State intervention in this issue is necessary in order to prevent fans from losing interest in watching events, also to prevent Brazilians from being financially harmed through manipulated bets and to avoid a drop in the economy due to the downturn in the sports market.”
There is still no work plan for the subcommittee nor what, in a more concrete sense, are the topics the group will focus on, given that the regulation of sports betting in Brazil is the responsibility of the Finance Ministry's Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA).
The Parliament has already approved the bill, it was sanctioned by President Lula and Congress overturned the vetoes on the matter, leaving only the promulgation of the law without the vetoes.
