Betfair: English fans prefer their club winning the Premier League over national team the Euro

With Euro 2024 approaching, Betfair, one of the largest sports betting companies in the world, conducted a survey in England, the birthplace of football, to understand the preferences of English and European fans regarding the tournament just days before the continental competition kicks off. The survey, carried out by YouGov Sport, indicated that fans prefer their favorite club to win local titles rather than the England national team the Euro.

According to the study conducted with 2,023 football fans, 63% prefer their club to win the next Premier League title over the national team winning the Euro.

Betfair also analyzed the betting volume of Brazilians on the platform for the main European national championship, with Spaniards being the favorites to win the title.

Chelsea and Brighton Fans are the most 'patriotic'

Chelsea and Brighton fans show more preference for England triumphing in the Euro than for their clubs in the Premier League: 60% of Stamford Bridge fans and 56% of Brighton fans prefer to see the English team lift the trophy in Germany than their own club winning.

With the 'Blues' being considered the most 'patriotic,' Liverpool fans stand out on the other end: 68% prefer to see their team win the Premier League, a tournament they have not won since the 2019/20 season, compared to only 32% of Reds fans who wouldn't let England walk alone in the Euro.

France favored for the title by the English, Bellingham to shine

Another significant finding in the survey is that 30% of fans surveyed by YouGov Sport say the favorite to win the title is France, the finalist of the last World Cup in 2022, in Qatar.

Although 22% of English respondents think England can win, the vast majority believe the team will reach the decisive stages of the tournament, with 37% believing England will reach the semifinals. Additionally, 31% believe Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham will be the key player for England in the Euro matches.

More than half (54%) believe this is the best English team since the 2006 generation, while 51% said Bellingham's impact is the reason the team can emerge victorious from the Euros.

Mbappé, the top scorer

Kylian Mbappé is seen as the tournament's top scorer, with over a third (34%) of football fans choosing him to be the leading goal scorer, while a fifth (20%) believe Harry Kane can repeat his feat at the 2018 World Cup and win the Golden Boot at Euro 2024.
