Brazilians bet 30% more in 2024 compared to last year

Every year, Brazilians are increasing the number of money they send abroad for betting purposes. From January to April 2024, they have already sent US$3.7 billion to ‘bets’ (as operators are locally known), representing 30.70% more than the value of the same period in 2023, which was US$2.8 billion. These numbers are part of the Central Bank's new balance of payments, which has data until April 2024.

From January to April 2024, Brazilian bettors have already sent US$3.7 billion to bookmakers, representing 32.14% more than the value for the same period in 2023, which was US$ 2.8 billion.

The numbers were compiled by the specialized website Aposta Legal Brasil, and are part of the Central Bank's balance of payments, which has data until April this year.

The total value of prizes paid by houses to bettors also followed the trend: from January to April 2024, Brazilian bettors received US$ 3.5 billion, compared to US$ 2.7 billion the previous year.

How much did bookmakers earn?

With Brazilians betting more, bookmakers naturally also end up making more money.

This is evident when seen that from January to April 2023, where operators earned US$ 768 million and in the same period in 2024, they received just over US$ 1 billion, included the total amount bet, with a growth of 30.20 %, almost the same percentage of bets that have risen since a year ago.

With the collection of taxes on companies that only come into force in 2025 - after all, operators are in the process of regularization and license to operate in Brazil - and considering a 12% rate on Gross Gaming Revenue, the country will be able to collect lots of funds if the regulation actually comes into effect next year.

To give you an idea, if the government already collected taxes, it would receive an average of 12 million dollars just for the period indicated from January to April 2024.

With this strong growth, it can be concluded that the betting market in Brazil is truly profitable and should generate a strong impact on the economy soon.
