Lula says he’ll sanction the law if Senate approves Bill that legalizes casinos and bingos in Brazil

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated this Friday (21) that, if Parliament allows casinos, bingos and jogo do bicho in the country, he will sanction the project. 'If Congress approves and an agreement was reached between the political parties and it is approved, there is no reason not to sanction it,” he said during an interview with Rádio Meio.

Last Wednesday (19), through a tight score, the Senate's Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) approved a project that allows gambling in Brazil, such as casinos, bingos and jogo do bicho.

The text, which has already been approved by the Chamber, will still have to be analyzed by the main plenary of the Senate. If the group of senators does not promote changes to the proposal and approve it, the text will go to Lula for sanction.

In the interview this Friday (21), president Lula said he was not in favor of gambling, but also stated that he did not consider it a crime.

"If Congress approves and an agreement was reached between the political parties and it is approved, there is no reason not to sanction it. I don't think this is what will solve Brazil's problem. This easy promise that will generate 2 million jobs, that will develop, that's not true either," he declared.

Lula stated that the release of casinos, for example, could generate jobs for poorer people.

"I don't believe that poor people will spend at the casino. Poor people don't go to the casino. Poor people will work at the casino. They don't go because it's something for people who have money. I've never been to a casino," he declared.

The president also highlighted the prevention of online sports betting houses and declared attention to the practice among younger people.
