Sportradar warns about suspected match-fixing in a Brasileirão Series D game

Specializing in sports technology and monitoring possible match-fixing, Swiss company Sportradar is responsible for the report that initiated a Federal Police investigation that resulted in the ‘Jogo Limpo’ (Fair Play) Operation, launched this Wednesday (26). The case investigates the suspicion of manipulation in a football match between Inter de Limeira 3 x 0 Patrocinense, valid for the Brasileirão Series D, held in the interior of São Paulo.

In a note on social media, Inter de Limeira team says it is aware of the investigations and is available to the competent authorities to collaborate with any necessary clarification. "International reaffirms its commitment to clean and correct football, hoping that all issues are duly investigated and clarified."

When contacted, Patrocinense and CBF (Confederação Brasileira de Futebol) did not respond by the time Folha's report was published.

The Federal Police investigation began through a letter from the CBF, forwarding a report from Sportradar which indicated, based on the activity of the bookmakers, that bettors knew that a certain team would lose the first half of the match by at least two goals. According to the company, 99% of the turnover attempt in the "first half total goals" market in this match was for this result.

A CBF partner since 2018, Sportradar analyzes atypical movements on betting sites that may indicate manipulation. The work is carried out, above all, with artificial intelligence tools, but is carried out by professionals who carry out an investigation after indicating the system.

The company also provides services to FIFA (International Football Federation), UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) and Conmebol (South American Football Confederation).

109 matches in 2023

Sportradar had already delivered a report to the CBF at the beginning of the year that highlighted the suspicion of manipulation in 109 matches held in the country in 2023. Of the total number of games analyzed, 15 are from competitions organized by the CBF: one for the Brazilian Series B, 13 for the Series D and one for the Copa Verde. The company monitored, in total, 9,000 games in 118 national and regional championships.

"It is much more important to analyze liquidity flows and see from betting behaviors whether there is someone who used them," Carsten Koerl, CEO of Sportradar, told Folha in April.

The executive stated at the time that Sportradar's monitoring systems did not detect irregularities in series A of the 2023 Brazilian Championship. There were no anomalies in the sports betting network that would cause suspicion, said Koerl.
