Brazilian deputy wants to include famous “Fortune Tiger” game in the Selective Tax

One of the members of the working group that analyzes the main text of the tax reform regulations in Brazil, federal deputy Joaquim Passarinho defends including games of chance like “Fortune Tiger” (Jogo do Tigrinho) in the Selective Tax. He focuses on products considered harmful to health and the environment and aims to review the tax issue of the law on sports betting and online gambling.

At the end of last year, President Lula sanctioned a law that regulates betting and opens up the possibility for online casinos to operate, which would provide opportunities for virtual gambling.

According to the Criminal Misdemeanors law, however, the exploitation of games of chance is prohibited. A project approved by the Chamber in 2022 says that the exploration of these games will depend on regulation by the Treasury, but the text is blocked in the Senate.

Federal deputy Joaquim Passarinho (PL-PA) said he had asked the Federal Revenue Service for a study on gambling available on cell phones and online to have access to the numbers operated by the activity.

"I don't know why not put it in the Selective. You have to include it. 'Ah, wow, but they're paying normal taxes'. But you're harming society," he says.

"There are people who are completely in debt because of this. Of course, it's bad for people's mental health. If we're taxing even soda, why don't we tax these guys? I'm going to propose taxing Fortune Tiger and these cell phone games," he adds.

The over-indebtedness of Brazilians and the addiction of gamblers have already been the target of concern for the government, which, in April, banned the use of credit cards as a means of payment for sports betting and online games.
