It will become a Hard Rock guitar-shaped casino resort

Iconic Mirage closes on Las Vegas Strip after 34 years of operations

After 34 years of operations on the Las Vegas Strip, the Mirage and its iconic volcano will close its doors today, July 17th, in preparation for a three-year renovation to bring a Hard Rock guitar-shaped casino resort to the Strip. The company purchased the Mirage from MGM Resorts International in 2023 for US$1.08 billion.

The final farewell event for the iconic property is scheduled to start at 9 a.m (Las Vegas time) with the doors officially closing at 11 a.m. Staff will start the process to stop all gaming operations at midnight and anticipate finishing around 4 a.m.

Opened in 1989 by Steve Wynn, the Mirage brought in a new era of luxury resorts to the Strip. Its owners stated: “We look forward to the beginning of an exciting journey into a new era as Hard Rock Las Vegas will ignite the Strip with entertainment, innovation and world-class hospitality.”

Among its many attractions, The Mirage has hosted the Siegfried and Roy’s white tigers show, Cirque du Soleil and the Beatles music.

Joe Lupo, President of The Mirage, said: “While we pause for the incredible transformation of this iconic property, I’d like to thank all team members at The Mirage for their incredible commitment and helping us provide memorable experiences for our guests. The Mirage was a transcendent property, changing the landscape of Las Vegas. We are confident that Hard Rock Las Vegas will do the same in 2027.”

Once the doors close, the process will start to renovate the property into a Hard Rock International resort, which is scheduled to reopen in 2027.

The company purchased the Mirage from MGM Resorts International in 2023 for $1.08 billion. Plans include building the already famous guitar-shaped hotel where the current volcano attraction is right now.

The transition is expected to have a significant impact on the local job market. The project aims to double the number of jobs currently available at The Mirage and create over 2,500 construction jobs.
