The betting market is growing every day in Brazil and worldwide, and women's participation in this sector is also increasing. However, we still face challenges and see many opportunities.
Overview of women's participation in the global betting market
Although women are still less represented numerically, they are taking on prominent positions in the gaming industry and also redefining the concept of leadership.
Globally, women are leading approximately 10% of Fortune 500 listed companies, a historic milestone. In the European betting market, women hold about 18% of board positions, demonstrating significant progress.
In Latin America, 52% of senior positions in gaming and betting companies are held by men. In Brazil, in 2023, women occupied 38% of leadership positions in the betting industry.
A notable example is a major betting company that sponsors Brazilian clubs and has about 50% women in its workforce.
Regarding female participation as players and consumers, there has been a 40% increase in the number of female customers in the past decade, highlighting the growing inclusion of women in the betting market.
Betting companies are increasingly aware of the importance of diversity and inclusion. Female presence can bring new perspectives and approaches to the industry, helping to develop more inclusive and diverse products and services.
Initiatives aimed at the inclusion of women are gaining strength, paving the way for more female leadership opportunities.
Many opportunities in technology and innovation fields
With technological advancement, new opportunities are also emerging in these areas. Tools based on artificial intelligence and blockchain are transforming the betting market, allowing women with technological skills to find niches and stand out.
Additionally, the popularity of mobile platforms and virtual reality creates new possibilities for innovative women.
Gender inequality remains a challenge
Despite growth and opportunities, gender inequality remains a significant difficulty. Women often face barriers to reaching leadership positions and may encounter a predominantly male and hostile environment. The female presence in senior positions is still limited, reflecting an urgent need for more effective equality policies.
Investing in education and training for women in the gaming industry is necessary
The lack of specific educational and training programs for women in the betting sector can be an obstacle. Investing in education and training can help prepare more women for technical and management positions, providing the necessary skills to thrive in this competitive environment.
AMIG is a visibility force for women in gaming
It is due to these and other issues involving women's participation in the gaming and betting market that the Women in the Gaming Industry Association (AMIG) was born, of which I am one of the founders.
Since we have been working in this industry for many years, Ana Bárbara Costa Teixeira, Ana Helena Pamplona, Bárbara Teles, Luciana Hendrich, and I decided to create the association with the aim of fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment in our market.
Given the challenges faced in a predominantly male environment, where women are often underestimated or discriminated against, AMIG is an initiative that aims to change female perspectives in the segment.
The presence of women in the betting market is on the rise, bringing clear benefits to the industry through new perspectives and greater innovation. However, for this inclusion to be effective, it is essential to address the challenges of gender inequality and promote a more inclusive and regulated environment.
These changes not only benefit women but also strengthen the entire industry, promoting sustainable and responsible growth.
