Impacts of online gaming to be debated by Senate’s Science and Technology Committee

Online betting games, such as the Fortune Tiger, will be the subject of debate by the Science and Technology Committee (CCT). The public hearing, requested by Senator Soraya Thronicke, is scheduled for this Wednesday (14) at 11 am. The intention is to discuss the impacts of this modality on society.

In the request, Senator Soraya Thronicke cites an ordinance published in July by the Ministry of Finance with the criteria for each online game to be submitted for certification (Ordinance No. 1,207, of 2024). The ordinance is part of the regulation of Law No. 14,790/2023, which provides for the fixed-odds lottery betting modality, sanctioned in December 2023.

“It is crucial that the Senate exercise its oversight role to ensure that these activities are conducted in a transparent, responsible manner and within the established legal parameters,” says the senator in the request. Thronicke specifically cites the Fortune Tiger game, and points out the need to prevent access by minors.

The presidents of One Internet Group (OIG), Fernando Oliveira Lima, and of the National Association of Games and Lotteries (ANJL), Plínio Lemos Jorge, were invited to the hearing, as well as representatives from the Ministries of Science, Technology and Innovation, Finance and Justice and Public Security.

How to participate

The event will be interactive: citizens can send questions and comments by calling the Senate Ombudsman's Office (0800 061 2211) or through the e-Citizenship Portal, which can be read and answered by senators and debaters live.

The Senate offers a declaration of participation, which can be used as a complementary activity time in a university course, for example.
