Former president of Brazil’s ANJL to be heard about alleged request for bribery

The former president of the National Association of Games and Lotteries (ANJL), Wesley Cardia, will be heard by the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into the Manipulation of Games and Sports Betting next Tuesday (6), as a witness. Cardia must provide clarifications about the news of an alleged request for financial advantage made to the association in exchange for protection in the Chamber of Deputies’ Parliamentary Parliamentary Inquiry Committee on Sports Betting.

The hearing responds to a request from the vice president of the committee, Senator Eduardo Girão. The senator cited a report from Veja magazine in September 2023 about the warning made by the former special advisor to the Ministry of Finance, José Francisco Manssur, to Minister Fernando Haddad about the charge of R$ 35 million (US$ 6m) - attributed to Congressman Felipe Carreras, rapporteur of the CPI in the Chamber - to the National Association of Games and Lotteries.

In testimony to the CPI on July 2, José Francisco Manssur confirmed that he received Cardia in his office and heard the report of the alleged request for financial advantage, but he stressed that he had no way of confirming whether the information was true.

Senator Carlos Portinho presented requests for clarification to the company Sportradar, regarding the alerts of suspected manipulation of results involving soccer matches from championships played in Brazil in the years from 2017 to 2021, with suspected manipulation.
