Leaders to decide whether bill that legalizes gambling in Brazil will go to Plenary next week

The president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, stated that the bill that legalizes casinos, bingo and jogo do bicho may go to the Plenary next week, but that the decision will be made at the meeting of the leaders of the benches scheduled for this Thursday (8). According to him, there is room to vote on the matter before municipal elections in October.

Bill 2.234/2022, which legalizes casinos, bingo and jogo do bicho, was approved by the Constitution and Justice Committee and is ready to go to the Plenary, however Pacheco is waiting for the thematic debate session, which will take place this Thursday (8), to define the entry on the agenda.

According to the Senate president, after the debate session, he will meet with the leaders of the benches to decide whether or not the bill will go to the Plenary next week.

The proposal is already ready to be voted on in the Plenary, but if the leaders believe that there is no climate for voting, Pacheco stated that the bill could go to a vote before the municipal elections in October.

According to Pacheco, there is room to vote on the matter before the elections. However, Pacheco considered that the elections do not interfere with the gaming law.

“The elections end up not being an important milestone for the gaming law. I don't think it has much to do with it. So, it could be before, or eventually, if the leaders understand that it should stay after the elections as well,” stated Pacheco.

He argued that one should not “force the issue with an agenda” that has divergences, and allow the leaders to express themselves. On the other hand, he considered that the matter should go to the agenda and be voted on.
