What is behind the sports betting? Key preferences and trends of the Brazilian market

In this edition of the ongoing partnership series with ENV Media, GMB presents insights and trends in Brazil's sports betting market. The research reveals that Brazilian bettors are highly engaged and prefer making well-informed decisions, using various strategies. They prioritize profit but also value excitement in a market dominated by football and the rise of eSports.

Discovering the preferences of Brazilian gamblers

A detailed survey reveals that Brazilian gamblers show a high level of engagement with sports betting. Around 50% bet weekly, while 21% bet daily. Added together, more than 70% of respondents bet at least once a week.

The national passion for sports, especially football, propels this frequency. The data shows that more than 90% of bettors focus their bets on football, reinforcing the importance of this sport in Brazilian culture and betting preferences.

The favoritism for football is such that the three sports that come next on the list of preferences of Brazilian gamblers —  basketball (28%), E-sports (29%), and volleyball — don't sum up, altogether, its score.

 

 

 

Although football dominates their preferences, Brazilians are increasingly betting on other sports. On average, they follow and place bets on around three different sports. Notably, a significant portion of Brazilian gamblers are also engaging in wagers on major global sporting events such as the Olympics (35%), Formula 1 (23%) and the Super Bowl (21%).

Motivations and bettors profile

The actual motivations for sports betting are slightly different from those behind gambling in general. This is mainly due to the intense emotions generated by real-world events.

And yet, the potential financial gain is still the main motivator for most sports bettors —  59% cite it above anything else.

This is followed by excitement (19%) as the second main factor. Many seek to "spice up" their match-watching experience by adding an element of risk and reward to the sports they follow.

Finally, in addition to involvement with friends and colleagues (13%) — which can easily be grouped with the perception of "tradition", cited by another 3% — we have marketing and advertising playing a key role in the motivations of 6% of respondents. 

This figure aligns with the 32% who frequently engage with betting content on virtual social networks and streaming platforms, major sources of information for many bettors. 

The quality and benefits of the platform are also valuable factors in understanding the preferences and motivations of Brazilian bettors. A user-friendly interface, attractive bonuses, and promotions are crucial factors in rating betting platforms.

Betting strategies and seeking information

Betting strategies play a crucial role in the success of Brazilian gamblers. When asked if they had any specific strategy for betting, only one in three (35%) admitted to not having a systematic plan of action for that.

 


The survey also shows that altogether 1 in 4 bettors spend more than an hour researching before placing a bet. This time investment reflects their seriousness and commitment to obtaining accurate and relevant information.

This information can come from various sources, such as team performance statistics, expert analysis, and historical data.

In addition, many follow betting influencers on social media and participate in online forums and groups to exchange tips and strategies. Interaction on social media is significant, with 47% following betting accounts and 37% participating in betting discussion groups.

What to expect in the coming years

The sports betting scene in Brazil is promising and constantly changing. The passion for sport, combined with the search for financial gain and social involvement, creates a dynamic and competitive environment.

As a result, it is natural to expect that sports bettors will continue to research and consume content to enhance their chances of success through informed decision-making and strategic approaches. Consequently, it is reasonable to assume that the number of informed bettors will increase as the iGaming market in Brazil grows.

In other words, the evolution and maturing of this market have generated an unprecedented demand for quality information and careful research on online games in Brazil.
