The invitation to Barreirinhas responds to a request from Senator Carlos Portinho. In his justification, the parliamentarian cites a report from Folha de S. Paulo on May 20 that draws attention to the high remittances abroad through sports betting and highlighted the “insecurity” surrounding the topic.
“It is imperative to first know whether these sports betting platforms that operate openly in the national market, including sponsoring numerous clubs in Series A and B of the Brazilian Football Championship, advertising on various open TV media outlets, are operating legally or illegally in the country, moving billions of reais, sending these resources to other countries, and not collecting the taxes due,” said Portinho.
Requests
The CPI will also vote on three requests for invitations to testify. One, presented by Carlos Portinho, is addressed to the president of the Superior Court of Sports Justice for Football (STJD), Luís Otávio Veríssimo Teixeira, and to the attorney general of the STJD, Paulo Emílio Dantas Nazaré, so that they can clarify the measures planned to deal with betting manipulation.
Portinho also requested a hearing from former soccer referee Alfredo Loebeling regarding allegations of technological flaws and limitations in the VAR system acquired by the Brazilian Soccer Confederation (CBF). And Senator Romário, rapporteur of the CPI, requested the presence of André Pereira Cardoso Gelfi, president of the Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming (IBJR), regarding the institute's position on the regulation of sports betting.
In another request to be voted on, Portinho requests that the STJD provide certificates of all cases involving game manipulation that are being processed in sports courts, with the identification of the respective clubs and athletes. The senator believes that the information could clarify the CPI's suspicion that, in the absence of centralized information, people investigated in the sports court of one state may migrate to another state.
