Deputy wants to allocate 10% of gaming taxes to combat climate change effects

Brazilian federal deputy Júlio Oliveira presented Bill 3610/2024 to the Deputies Chamber, which proposes allocating 10% of gaming taxes to create a fund to combat the effects of climate change. The money collected would be managed by the Ministry of the Environment in conjunction with state and municipal governments.

In his justification, Júlio Oliveira points out that 2024 highlighted the severity of the climate crisis faced by Brazil and that to date more than 184 thousand forest fires have been recorded.

For him, the creation of a fund with resources from gaming taxes will represent a stable and sustainable source of financing for climate actions.

According to the proposal presented, it is mandatory to allocate 10% of taxes collected from sports betting, online casinos and other regulated online betting in Brazil to create a special fund aimed at combating the effects of climate change.

The fund would be managed by the Ministry of the Environment in conjunction with state and municipal governments, through the creation of a management board with equal participation and voting rights, to implement actions to prevent and combat climate disasters, including forest fires, floods, droughts and landslides.

The transfer would be made monthly according to the amounts collected from taxes on regulated online betting and its use would be subject to oversight by the competent bodies, with transparency and accountability to the Federal Court of Auditors.

Bill 3610/2024 awaits approval by the president of the Chamber of Deputies to begin its processing in the house.
