Finance and Health Ministries consider creating instruction booklet on gambling addiction

The Finance and Health Ministries are considering creating an information booklet on sports betting addiction and dependence in Brazil through a working group on the subject. The idea is for both agencies to work together to exchange information to develop joint policies.

The Ministries of Finance and Health are analyzing the possibility of developing an informative guide on sports betting addiction and dependence in Brazil through a working group dedicated to the subject. The proposal is for the two agencies to collaborate by exchanging information to create integrated policies. The preparation of the guide should be completed by the end of this year.

According to the Secretary of Prizes and Betting, Regis Dudena, in an interview with the Poder 360 portal, an interministerial working group on the subject will be created. “This interaction will allow us to receive technical information and use it in our relationship with bookmakers,” he stated.

Another idea is to determine that bookmakers complete a form with central guidance on topics related to the health of their customers. The government must prepare a basic document to be submitted by the companies.

The agents themselves can make it available. What we intend to do is structure a basic questionnaire that can be submitted by all market agents,” he said.

The secretary also mentioned a possible way to integrate the Unified Health System (SUS) into treatment actions for problems linked to possible addiction.

The expectation is that reports will be prepared with data on the consumption of betting houses by users, such as screen time and online frequency. But this should only be done in 2025, when the regulation of virtual houses comes into full effect.

The working group of the ministries should be composed of technicians from both agencies. The main focus on the Treasury side will be the Prizes and Bets Secretariat, said the head Regis Dudena.
