Contributions for the development of an ordinance

COB, Sports Ministry, ANJL and IBIA discuss measures on integrity and the betting market

The importance of integrity in Brazilian sports and the betting market was the topic of a meeting between the Ministry of Sports, the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), the National Association of Games and Lotteries (ANJL) and the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA). The event brought together contributions for the development of an ordinance to prevent and combat the manipulation of event results.

The meeting discussed the current scenario in Brazil, amid the process of regulating betting houses, and also considered international experiences on the subject. Participants highlighted the main challenges and suggested measures to prevent match-fixing, which harms both sports and betting.

The president of ANJL, Plínio Lemos Jorge, says that the idea was to gather contributions from the market, represented by the association, with the keen eye of IBIA, the world's leading authority in the area, to draft an ordinance on the subject.

“Since last year, when the first operations resulting from investigations by the police and the Public Prosecutor's Office were launched, ANJL has been stating how damaging match-fixing is for the entire sector. These schemes ‘break the bank’ of betting houses and also put the reputation and credibility of sporting events in Brazil at risk. In other words, it is bad for everyone, including honest bettors,” said Plínio.

The meeting was attended by the National Secretary of Sports Betting and Sports Development, Giovanni Rocco, and directors from various areas of the secretariat linked to the Ministry of Sports.

Representing ANJL, president Plínio Lemos Jorge and legal consultants Ana Bárbara Teixeira and Pietro Cardia were present. Representing the COB were the coordinator of the Division for the Prevention of Competition Manipulation, Paulo Schmitt, and legal director Luciano Hostins.

From IBIA, which is an integrity partner of the IOC, attended Silvia Paleari and Antonio Abdilla Zefara, director of Institutional Relations and Project Consultant, respectively.

Launched in March 2023, the National Association of Games and Lotteries defends the interests of its members, the sector and responsible and honest gaming, always guided by the promotion of sports, the security of bets and the contribution to the country's economic development.
