New regulatory requirements in Brazil

Google will block ads from ‘Bets' without authorization from the Finance Ministry

Google will require that ‘Bets’ – as operators are called in Brazil - obtain authorization from the Ministry of Finance to release ads for sports betting or online gambling on its platforms. The changes will come into effect this Monday (30). The changes reflect new regulatory requirements in Brazil. Finance will block irregular betting platforms operating in the country starting in October.

Only companies that have requested authorization to operate from the government and are already operating will be able to continue their activities between October and the end of December. The publication of the ordinance aims to combat gambling addiction in Brazil.

In order to advertise, Google reported that, based on the update to its advertising policy, betting platforms must obtain a Google certification, which can be obtained upon request.

Google also stated that horse racing and lottery operators will need to obtain certification again to continue advertising in Brazil starting this Monday (30).

So-called gambling aggregators of any kind will no longer be able to advertise in Brazil after September 30.

Two days ago, the president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, stated that the institution is monitoring the risks of default associated with the increase in online betting and gaming in Brazil. Another topic on the radar, according to Campos Neto, is the use of digital wallets to mediate credit card payments, through PIX.

On another front, the federal government is studying a series of measures to prevent the use of Bolsa Família funds to pay for online bets. In addition to blocking the social program card for paying for games and bets, one possibility under analysis is the transfer of ownership of the benefit.
