‘Bets’ allow to wager on candidates to mayors in at least 11 Brazilian capitals

A month before the first round of municipal elections in Brazil, the sports betting market is starting to get involved. According to local news outlet Veja, at least two ‘Bets’ – as operator ara called in Brazil - are offering odds for the election. In total, 11 capitals are being monitored by Superbet, and Sportingbet has only opened bets for the election of the mayor of São Paulo.

The sanction of the so-called “Bets Law” by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, just hours before the end of the first year of his term, shows that the political world has realized that this market requires attention. On the other hand, bettors are also paying attention to the electoral disputes. At least two betting sites have open markets with the candidates for the municipal elections.

A sponsor of the São Paulo, Fluminense and América-RJ football teams, in addition to the Ceará, Baiano and Capixaba championships and the Rock in Rio festival, Superbet allows bets on the elections in eleven capitals. Options are open for the races to mayor  in Salvador, Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Florianópolis, Belo Horizonte, Manaus, Curitiba, Belém, Fortaleza, Goiânia, and the state capital of São Paulo.

In São Paulo, the candidate most likely to win the elections, according to Superbet, is Pablo Marçal (PRTB). The odds for the coach are R$1.53 (US$ 0.27) for every real bet; next comes Guilherme Boulos (PSOL), who pays R$ 4.10 (US$ 0.73) for every real bet; Ricardo Nunes (MDB) pays R$ 5.50 (US$ 0.98) for every 1 real bet; Tabata Amaral (PSB), R$ 25 (US$ 4.43) for every 1 real bet; José Luiz Datena (PSDB), R$ 50 (US$ 8.86) for every 1 real bet; and the victory of Marina Helena (Novo), or another candidate, pays R$ 80 (US$ 14.2) for every 1 real bet.

In Rio de Janeiro, the betting house shows the comfortable advantage of Mayor Eduardo Paes (PSD), who is running for reelection. While a 1 real bet on Paes yields 1.03, the candidate who appears right behind is Alexandre Ramagem (PL), whose victory yields R$ 20 (U$ 3.55) for each 1 real (US$ 0.18) bet. Tarcísio Motta (PSOL) has odds of R$ 25 (US$ 4.43) to one; Cyro Garcia (PSTU) of R$ 50 (US$ 8.86) to one and other candidates of R$ 80 (US$ 14.2) for each 1 real.

Another website that also allows betting on candidates in the elections is Sportingbet, which has opened bets only for the São Paulo elections. In this market, Marçal is still the favorite, but with a smaller advantage. Bets on the PRTB candidate pay R$ 1.65 (US$ 0.29) for each real, followed by Boulos (R$3.75 / US$ 0.66), Nunes (R$4.50 / US$ 0.80), Tabata (R$ 26 / US$ 4.61), Datena (R$ 34 / US$6) and Marina Helena (R$51 / US$9).

Despite opening bets on only one electoral contest, Sportingbet allows bets on other issues in Brazilian politics. Bettors who believe that the blocking of X, a social network banned by the Supreme Federal Court, will be lifted before October can win R$ 4.30 (US$ 0.76) with one real bet. Those who think that the old Twitter will remain offline for longer in the country win less: one real yields 1.20.

The most competitive elections

According to the betting market, the most competitive electoral disputes in the country are in Fortaleza and Belém. In the capital of Ceará, the current mayor José Sarto (PDT) is ahead, with a quote of R$ 2.20 (US$ 0.39) but the victory of Capitão Wagner (União) is quoted at R$ 2.50 (US$ 0.44). Next come Evandro Leitão (PT) with R$ 3.75 reais, André Fernandes (PL) with R$ 5.50 (US$ 0.98), and Eduardo Girão (Novo) with R$ 50 (US$ 8.86).

In Belém, Igor Normando (MDB) has the lowest odds at R$ 1.75 (US$ 0.31) , followed by Éder Mauro (PL), at R$1.80 (US$0.32). Then comes the current mayor Edmilson Rodrigues (PSOL), at R$ 6.60 (US$ 1.17) for each real bet. Jefferson Lima (Podemos) and Thiago Araújo (Republicanos) are tied, according to the betting house, at odds of R$15 (US$ 2.66).
