16 out of 20 clubs feature a 'Bet' in the main sponsorship spot

With Sportingbet joining Palmeiras, betting companies now sponsor all teams in the Brasileirão

The presentation of Palmeiras' new master sponsor is emblematic. With the departure of the bank specialized in personal loans Crefisa and the arrival of Sportingbet, all the teams in the Brazilian Championship Series A display a betting house somewhere on their game uniform. Sixteen of 20 clubs have a bet in the most prominent advertising spot on the shirt.

There are four exceptions: Grêmio and Internacional advertise the state bank Banrisul in the main space. Red Bull Bragantino does not give up the Austrian energy drink brand. Recently promoted to the first division, Mirassol displays the Guaraná Poty.

If we take into account the complete uniform, all the teams in the country display an online casino on their uniform. Grêmio is a partner of Esportes da Sorte. Internacional is linked to Estrela Bet. Mirassol gives up space on its shirt to Bet7k. Bragantino gives up the fabric on its sleeves to Mr Jack.Bet. From this perspective, 100% of the elite teams are closed with the bets.

Rarely has such success been seen. In 1987, Coca-Cola displayed its brand on 10 of the 16 clubs participating in the first version of the Copa União. Flamengo, São Paulo, Corinthians, Internacional, Palmeiras and Santos did not display the soft drink's logo.

In 2017, the state-owned bank Caixa Econômica Federal sponsored 14 of the 20 teams in Série A. Corinthians, Palmeiras, São Paulo, Grêmio, Fluminense and Chapecoense did not join.

Therefore, the 100% participation of a single branch of the economy, that is, betting houses, represents a record in the history of the Brazilian Championship.

Hetmap CEO and sports marketing specialist Renê Salviano analyzes the growth: “The betting segment has been a major driver of the sponsorship market, not only in Brazil. It is a worldwide phenomenon, respecting the local rules of each country. This growth is normal, since the industry has a strong connection with sports, with football as the main leader, and the most betted on.”

There is no other segment with the capacity and interest to invest sponsorship resources in sports that even comes close to betting companies,” says José Francisco Manssur, partner at CSVM Advogados and former Special Advisor to the Executive Secretariat of the Ministry of Finance.
