Cançado and Romanowski, however, disagree with Google's internal policy. They demand that the platform also accept ads from 'Bets' authorized by them. The two sent letters to the company by the end of 2024 demanding a change.
Lotterj sent it on December 16th and Loterj on the 20th. Hazenclever even suggested a new wording for Google's policy in his letter. Daniel threatened to sue the company if it does not start accepting ads from the 'Bets' authorized by them.
Lotteries can grant authorizations for 'Bets' to operate in their states. Both lotteries are public companies directly linked to local governments and their presidents are chosen by the governor.
Google claims that it does not make regional cuts for this type of ad and that it reproduces in Brazil a policy similar to that adopted in other countries, of only accepting federal licenses for betting ads.
“Google supports responsible gambling advertising and adheres to local laws and industry standards. In order to comply with Brazilian legislation, we updated our gambling-related ad policy in October. As expected, as of January 1, only advertisers certified by the Ministry of Finance and with the necessary Google Ads certification will be able to operate on our platforms,” the big tech company told Poder360.
Loterj and Lottopar were contacted, but had not commented by the time this report was published.
