Rapporteur of ‘Bets’ CPI highlights pressure to end investigations in the Senate

TThe rapporteur of the ‘Bets’ CPI, Senator Soraya Thronicke, stated that this year's work should resume on the 18th. She highlighted that the support of the Senate president, Davi Alcolumbre, for the commission weakens the pressure to end the investigations into the use of betting by criminal organizations.

Soraya Thronicke stated that the president of the CPI, Senator Dr. Hiran, will define the schedule for voting on requests and hearings. And she stated that the CPI, scheduled to end on April 30, should not have its work extended, citing the assistance of the Federal Police in the investigations.

Since its inception on November 12, the ‘Bets’ CPI has held six meetings to vote on requests and hear from invited or summoned individuals, including the Secretary of Prizes and Betting of the Ministry of Finance, Regis Dudena, and businesspeople from the sector.

The chairman of the Committee, Senator Dr. Hiran, is expected to call a new meeting for the 18th, when the work will resume this year. The rapporteur, Senator Soraya Thronicke, stated that she will prioritize the analysis of the documents that have already been received by the CPI and schedule some statements.

She revealed that since the first month of investigations she has been receiving pressure to end the work. Soraya Thronicke stressed, however, that the senators will not be intimidated, especially since they have received the support of the President of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre, to advance the investigations related to the use of bets by organized crime.

We have many requests to approve and an agenda to manage because we have already approved more than 300 requests, including requests for information and hearings. So we need to deal with the agenda now. And Senator Davi’s commitment was to support our CPI. This is extremely important at a time when we see some people intending to simply end the CPI,” said the senator.

Soraya Thronicke mentioned the support of the Federal Police in the investigations of the ‘Bets’ CPI, which has already received more than 90 requested documents. She believes that it will not be necessary to request an extension of the deadline, since the commission’s work should be completed by April 30.

"The CPI is very complex and investigates several aspects of this criminal activity. And I will say that the issue of electronic games is a criminal activity, what we want is to regulate them because we are unable to prevent them. However, we need to investigate currency evasion, money laundering, organized crime and what they do in this area. But we will work hard to not drag this out for too long.”

Between November and December, the members of the ‘Bets’ CPI approved 240 requests and have already sent 115 official letters to various government departments, such as the Financial Activities Control Council (Coaf) and companies responsible for online betting sites. Senators are expected to vote on another 114 requests for information and summonses in the coming days.
