ANJL rejects accusations by the governor of Pernambuco who associated iGaming with crimes

The National Association of Games and Lotteries (ANJL) released an official statement rejecting accusations by the governor of Pernambuco, Raquel Lyra, that the sports betting and online gaming sector is associated with money laundering and organized crime. Speaking during the 1st General Assembly of the Northeast Consortium, Lyra wrongly spoke out against the activity.

ANJL Statement

The National Association of Games and Lotteries (ANJL) considers serious the accusations by the governor of Pernambuco, Raquel Lyra, who, during a speech at the 1st General Assembly of the Northeast Consortium in 2025, held in Brasília last week, associated the betting and online gaming sector, which is regulated, inspected and monitored by the Ministry of Finance, with money laundering and organized crime.

ANJL reinforces the importance of differentiating between licensed sports betting and online gaming companies and illegal websites that, without authorization to operate, do not pay taxes to the Federal Government, states and municipalities and represent a threat to all bettors and, in particular, to children, because access to bets is done without any type of restriction.

The Association agrees with the governor that this is a new market, with several companies spread throughout the country and even internationally, and that problems must be combated. However, the way forward is not through generic attacks against the entire sector, which generates jobs, income and is undergoing modernization.

ANJL is at the governor's and the consortium's disposal to demonstrate the numerous good practices that have been applied by the sector regulated by the Ministry of Finance, so that it is clear that our efforts must focus on illegal bets that do not follow strict compliance and governance criteria.

ANJL also emphasizes that it has been working to raise awareness among the entire population about the need to have fun in licensed homes and avoid illegal websites. The regulated sector, unlike the illegal one, is estimated to generate 60 thousand new jobs and more than R$ 20 billion in annual tax revenue for the country.

Finally, ANJL also reinforces that all citizens who are aware of illegal houses have the duty to inform the competent authorities so that the facts can be investigated
