“We are going to extend the meeting due to the issue of Lucas Paquetá, because there is an expectation that his trial will take place in March, and his uncle should already be indicted. We want to hear more witnesses, not only about this case. We have also been waiting for William Rogatto's extradition for four months, and we are sending an official letter to find out why it has not happened yet,” says Carlos Portinho, a member of the CPI.
According to him, the president of the CPI, Jorge Kajuru, led the collection of signatures to extend the investigations by the Commission.
Among the measures provided for in the report already made available by Romário and which was to be read on Tuesday (11) is the end of bets on isolated events, such as cards and penalties, reinforcement of compliance with rules on advertising bets and exchange of information from government agencies in the fight against match-fixing.
The decision to cancel the meeting to read the report was made after the collection of the signatures necessary to postpone the end of the CPI. Senator Romário's report should propose the indictment of three people for involvement in sports manipulation: William Rogatto - known as the "King of Relegations", Thiago Chambó Andrade and Bruno Tolentino, uncle of player Lucas Paquetá.
According to the investigations, William Rogatto made around 300 million reais by manipulating results and causing the relegation of 42 clubs in nine countries. He is also the target of Operation VAR, which is investigating fraud in the Série B of the Campeonato Carioca. Another target of the final report, Bruno Tolentino, is accused of involvement in suspicious bets. Thiago Chambó Andrade is also identified as one of the financiers of the scheme.
The penalties for the crimes investigated range from two to 12 years in prison, depending on the involvement of each person under investigation. If the CPI report is approved, it will be forwarded to the Public Prosecutor's Office and the Courts, which may result in new criminal proceedings against those involved.
The CPI on Gambling and Sports Betting Manipulation is chaired by Senator Kajuru and is reported by Romário. A new meeting has not yet been scheduled to read the report or to continue the investigation.
