Second largest private bank in Brazil

Bradesco advises customers not to bet and to seek other options for getting money

Bradesco, the second largest private financial institution in the country in terms of assets, has started to warn its customers every time they send Pix to pay for gamble on ‘Bets’. It is the first large bank to expose a war that has been taking place behind the scenes. The financial sector believes that the regulation of iGaming encourages spending on bets and drains resources that could be invested by Brazilians.

"Betting does not guarantee a financial return and the money can be completely lost. Take care of your financial health and look for safer options to increase the value of your money," says the message from Bradesco. The bank then offers two options: continue anyway or cancel Pix.

A few weeks ago, Nubank started to propose alternatives for using money by identifying a Pix key associated with 'Bets' (as the operators are called in Brazil). "How about saving this money?", says the warning.

The betting industry associations released a statement of repudiation pointing out the measure as a "position contrary to economic freedom and regulated activity."

When asked, Bradesco said that the initiative is merely informative in nature, without imposing restrictions on customer transactions. "The goal is to offer tools that help customers manage their resources," it said in a statement.
