“We have a law that states that unlicensed betting companies cannot operate in Brazil. But how is the Brazilian government going to prevent them from operating? We have already received almost 10,000 orders to block betting companies. But it is a challenge, it is like mopping up ice. Because if they block it, they can use subterfuges that are not in the telecommunications environment, they are other digital infrastructures, and they can circumvent the blocks,” stated Baigorri.
When participating in the Communications Policies Seminar, held by the Teletime portal this Tuesday (18), the president of Anatel highlighted a proposal already presented to the government and the National Congress to expand the agency's power in this area.
“We presented to the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Sports and to Senator Soraya Thronicke, rapporteur of the CPI on betting in the Senate, a proposal to change the legislation to allow that, in the specific case, blocking orders can also be required from other agents, from other digital infrastructures, which are not telecommunications, such as DNS ‘of life’, such as Cloudflares, Google and OpenDNS,” said Baigorri.
“These are agents that are not telecommunications, they are not subject to the General Telecommunications Law, but they are able to facilitate access to content that, due to other legislation or court decisions, should be blocked in Brazil,” he added.
