To prevent over-indebtedness

Brazilian bank C6 blocks betting transactions if customers overdraw their accounts

After Nubank and Bradesco advised customers not to gamble, C6 Bank decided to block Pix and transfers from customers who exceed their account limit to wagger on sports betting sites. The financial institution reported that the measure is to prevent over-indebtedness.

In situations like this, the bank informs the customer that the transaction was denied and explains the reason.

"Transactions via TED, TEF and Pix: Transactions that exceed the current account limit for placing bets are not permitted," says the message.

The bank also informs that this measure is part of its commitment to promote responsible gaming practices and avoid excessive individualization.

The institution also does not allow the use of credit cards and subsidies for betting.

The bank confirmed the policy through its press office. “Aware of the population’s over-indebtedness due to gambling, C6 Bank has adopted a policy of blocking the use of credit cards and special checks to place bets at betting houses,” it said in a statement.

The measure comes shortly after Bradesco decided to warn its customers that money spent on bets is lost and could be used for savings or any other type of investment. The bank, however, stated that it does not prevent account holders from making bets.

Previously, Nubank began sending a message to its customers when making transfers for 'Bets'  that it would be better to use the digital bank’s ATMs to save money and let the money earn interest.

Behind the scenes, 'Bets' - as the operators are called - complain about this situation and believe that this power struggle with banks will weaken official houses and push bettors to illegal sites.

This is also the position defended by Paag, a technology and payments company for the sports betting and online gaming sector.
