Procon Guarulhos holds lecture to guide consumers about online gambling

A group of consumers participated in a lecture about gambling in the auditorium of Procon Guarulhos last week. The event is part of Consumer Week and aimed to guide a portion of the population about risks to mental health and over-indebtedness.

"This lecture has an exceptional nature, including discussions on mental health. As part of Procon’s mission, we have taken an important step in raising consumer awareness about online betting, which can violate basic rights and lead to over-indebtedness," said management advisor Heitor Miranda, who represented the coordinator of Procon Guarulhos, Maurício Júnior Hora, at the event.

Online gambling was legalized in the country in 2018, but regulations were only implemented five years later, allowing betting companies to operate without clear guidelines, leading to numerous abuses. As a result, many consumers have become addicted, dependent, and financially burdened.

"The issue of betting is a social concern and affects the lives of thousands of consumers. That is why it is extremely important for the public to be aware of the risks to life, health, and safety associated with this type of service," stated Christian Printes, legal manager of the Consumer Protection Institute (Idec).

In case of doubts or conflicts related to betting, Procon Guarulhos is available to guide and assist the public, as well as to take the necessary measures to protect consumer rights.

Consumer Week is held in celebration of Consumer Day in Brazil, which was established following the enactment of the Consumer Protection Code on March 15, 1991.
