If approved, clubs will have to change uniforms

Legislative Assembly votes on bill that aims to ban ads from ‘Bets’ at sporting events in Rio

The Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj) votes this Thursday (20) in the first discussion on Bill 3591/2024, which prohibits advertising and sponsorship of betting companies in sporting activities in the State. The change may force the 20 clubs in the Brazilian Series A to change their uniforms in games held in RJ.

The bill, authored by deputy Rodrigo Amorim (União), and already approved by the Constitution and Justice Committee, covers any sporting modality, but the measure, if it passes in both votes, will have an even greater impact on football.

All Série A clubs are sponsored by betting companies, with 90% of them featuring sports betting companies as the main sponsor, prominently displayed in the center of the uniform. Only Bragantino and Mirassol, both from São Paulo, do not display these brands - but they are sponsored by two sports betting and online gaming companies.

“There are alarming statistics about the excessive use of betting sites in Brazil,” says Amorim. “It is already known that more than 80% of Brazilians who use these sites are in debt,” the deputy states.

According to the bill already approved by the CCJ, sponsorship and advertising by betting companies and sites or similar companies, in any form, in all sports activities are prohibited in Rio. The prohibition extends to advertising on shirts, caps, visors, and other similar items, sports arenas and equipment, as well as radio, television or online broadcasts.

The use of athletes' images in marketing will also be prohibited in Rio, as well as the inclusion of promotional gifts, toys or collectible items associated with sports betting.

In case of non-compliance with the restrictions presented in the previous articles, the offender will be subject to the penalties of suspension of the broadcasting of the advertising and a fine.
