Macau VIP expands 35% in third quarter

According to the figures released by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ),Macau continues to enjoy a robust VIP segment in the third quarter. Data showed that city’s VIP numbers showed a 35% expansion in the July to September 2017, with VIP baccarat leading the sudden surge of casino gross gaming revenue (GGR).

VIP baccarat GGR, which is approximately at US$4.81 billion in third quarter of 2016, makes up 57.7% of all casino revenue. In the third quarter 2016, VIP baccarat was nearly 52.1% or US$3.56 billion.

The mass market GGR, on the other hand, is also in the upside posting a 7.4% increase in the 92-day period. Including the slot machines, mass market GGR rose to US$3.52 billion.

From 16,204 in the previous quarter, the number of slot machines in the market grew 0.7% to 16,310 during the third quarter of this year.

The DICJ also reported that the market aggregate for all casino GGR expanded by 21.8% to US$2.7 billion.

Many analysts had expected that Macau’s casino sector earnings would likely to have slowed to 16% in the third quarter, compared to 28% expansion in the second quarter due to a higher base comparison.

Analysts did not consider the damage from Typhoon Hato in its third-quarter assessment because they believe that the damage would be partly covered by insurance, and that investors should look beyond that event.
