Nevada boosted by Mayweather-McGregor fight in August

The Nevada Gaming Control Board has said that the US state was able to post a near-15% year-on-year increase in gambling revenue in August, due in part to enhanced activity in sports betting.

Overall gaming revenue in Nevada amounted to US$989.5 million in August, up more than US$120 million on the US$861.1 million in the corresponding month last year.

The Strip area of Las Vegas experienced the largest growth, with revenue up by 21.35% year-on-year, although North Las Vegas, Laughlin, Boulder Strip and Mesquite also saw revenue climb in the month.

Analysts have put the impressive year-on-year growth down to a higher level of sports betting in the month, boosted by the high profile boxing match between professional boxer Floyd Mayweather and mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor.

The bout took place on August 26 at the T-Mobile Arena on the Las Vegas Strip, with Mayweather coming out on top.

However, despite the revenue figure representing a year-on-year increase, it is down on the US$998 million collected in July this year.
