Loterj launches in Brazil campaign against LOTEX monopoly

Affirming that more tan US$ 6.35 million for social projects are threatened if the Ministry of Finance is able to prevent state lotteries from continuing to operate because of the sale of LOTEX with exclusive exploitation for the future operator, LOTERJ launched the campaign with a popular petition to seek signatures against the measure.

In a public hearing at the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj), convened by Paulo Ramos (PSOL / RJ), president of the Committee on Labor, Social Legislation and Safety, the #ViraOJogoRio campaign was launched on yesterday (Wednesday 4th). The objective is to gather signatures on the website www.viraojogorio.com.br to show to the Ministry of Finance that Rio de Janeiro is not willing to give up more resources that finance day care centers, asylums and institutions that care for children, the elderly, victims of violence and people with special needs.

The Secretariat of Economic Monitoring of the Ministry of Finance (SEAE / MF) is making a road show to present the information of the instant lottery (Lotex) concession in the international and national markets, which monopolizes this operation, and according to LOTERJ, will prevent the State Lotteries to continue doing their job. In the case of the State Lottery of Rio de Janeiro ( Loterj), which has been operating for almost 80 years, this represents the end of the transfer of funds to social entities, which would lead to the closure of these institutions and around 2,500 layoffs.

The president of Loterj, Sérgio Ricardo de Almeida, attended the hearing and took the opportunity to launch the campaign.

"We are not here to defend my job and that of the Loterj employees, but to stand against the illegal monopoly that the Union wants to institute in relation to the instant lottery, respect for the federative pact and to defend who else needs and is helped by the resources of Loterj," says de Almeida.

Loterj's president also said he hoped the Supreme Court would uphold previous decisions by ministers EllenGraciee Ayres Brittoe overturning the monopoly thesis defended by the SEAE.

By law, 70% of Loterj's profit has to be transfered to social projects.

Meanwhile, Parliamentary Paulo Ramos proposed the creation of a Parliamentary Front to support Loterj. "We will call on the two Carioca ministers to sensitize the Federal Government on the issue," he said.

Cibele Gomes, a Loterj employee, went to the audience: "I have been working there for 29 years and I believe in the importance of what is done. The allocation of resources to social projects gives a much larger dimension to the sense of what we do."

In the site www.viraojogorio.com.br is available the list of all institutions attended.
