The Government should clarify the rules

Peru wants to regulate online casino and sports betting

Manuel San Román, head of the Peruvian regulator, said his team group is working with Peru's finances to draft a bill to send to the congress, which will regulate online gambling in the country. The activity is neither legal nor illegal in Peru as the civil code allows practically all forms of gaming, except greyhound racing machines.

According to San Román, this is not the first time that this request has been made, as in June he said that the legislation would enter Congress by the end of July. But no law has yet been passed.

Online gambling is neither legal nor illegal in Peru, as the local civil code allows practically all forms of gaming, except greyhound racing machines.

But the head of the Peruvian gaming regulator wants the government to clarify and codify the rules of online to benefit companies based in Peru. The government, it is estimated, will charge betting rates to anyone with a company based in the country. The current firms already pay about 12%, especially to land-based ones.

The Regulatory Act will also create a set of rules on advertising, promotions and sponsorships and even force those sites to have domains .pe to operate exclusively in the country.

For those who do not comply with the new requirements of the Law, if it is approved, San Román plans to ask the Ministry of Communications for help to block their domains.

The regulator also announced that the land-based gaming industry contributed about 92 million dollars in taxes in 2016. There was a slight rise compared to the previous year, 2015, when it rose about 7.6%.
