Brazilian government plans to boost soccer lottery to raise more

Even during the economic crisis, Brazilians did not stop playing lottery games. Ministry of Finance is eyeing the sector and has even launched a prize to deepen studies on the subject. Only 1% of federal lottery revenues come from football matches (sport prognostics), and 99% from 'numbers draw”. But the government says it expects a bigger slice of football games.

After raising taxation on fuel to make cash, another giant market, which collects many taxes and reverses part of the income for social programs, is in the sights of the federal government. For Planalto, there is untapped potential for sports lotteries, such as Loteca and Lotogol.

The Ministry of Finance is studying the subject in depth to learn about the world's best practices on the subject, aiming to expand the possibilities of gaming and betting in the country, and will even award prizes totaling US$ 22,000 for the best proposals.

"This low participation in total revenue contrasts with the exploitation of this modality around the world [it is around 7% of total lottery revenues, according to the World Lottery Association.] Considering also the fact that football has a strong popular appeal in the Brazil and this being the basis for this mode of lottery, it would be expected greater participation of the modality "Lottery of Sports Prognostics in Brazil,” says the Secretariat of Economic Affairs (SEAE) of the Ministry of Finance in a bulletin on lotteries.

To get the best ideas, the federal government is promoting an academic award on lotteries and will offer US$ 22,000 in prizes for six monographs on the subject, under the themes "Regulation of Lotteries in Brazil" and "Aspects of Corporate Social Responsibility Of the Lotteries. " Registration is open until September 18. The result will be published on November 29 of this year. Candidates of any nationality and academic background may participate.
