Online casino games lead the Spanish market

According to the report of the Dirección General de Ordenacion del Juego (DGOJ), this marks the first time that sports betting were surpassed since it started to lead the market in 2012. This fact was in somehow easy to anticipate, considering the visible growth experienced by the online casino games sector, which comprehends roulette, blackjack and slot machines.

Slots were precisely the game that fuelled the sector, since they were officially launched to the Spanish online gaming market in mid 2015. Only looking at figures from the 2Q 2017, compared to the same period of the previous year, the casino segment saw an increment of 49.7% in money bet.

Since mid 2015, slots have been continuously improving their figures and gaining ground against the ever-leading sports betting sector. Unlike slots, sports betting has been offered in the Spanish online gaming market since its official launch in 2012, giving them a wide margin of advantage.

The fact of sports betting being surpassed during 2Q 2017 is only due to the excellent performance of slots. At the moment figures show only a 2% difference, however, if the trend continues casino games segment could take a definitive leadership by next year.
