A Senator initiative

Australia might lift online poker restrictions

According to local media reports, the Australian government could soon lift online poker restrictions. Liberal Democrat Senator David Leyonhjelm negotiated a review as a ‘liberty offset’ for agreeing to media reforms. The deal is not included in formal amendments to the media law reforms which edged closer last night.

Communications Minister Mitch Fifield has instructed his department to undertake some preliminary work "examining the feasibility of Australian onshore providers obtaining licences to operate online poker.”

Any reforms would be contingent on Minister Fifield obtaining partyroom approval, but Senator Leyonhjelm said he understood Human Services Minister Alan Tudge was open to the changes.

"I believe we have won the ‘in-principle’ battle,” said Leyonhjelm. "The question now will be how to make it happen in practice.”
