Paraguayan gaming regulator Conajzar has new president

The president of Paraguay, Mario Abdo Benítez, through Decree 373/18, appointed José Antonio Ortiz Báez as the new representative of the Ministry of Finance before the National Gaming Commission (Conajzar). Ortiz Báez replaces Óscar Ramón Portillo, who had been appointed by the previous government last March.

According to Law 1016/97, the Conajzar is made up of representatives of the Treasury, the municipalities, departmental governments, the Ministry of the Interior and the Department of Charity and Social Assistance (Dibén). However, it works under the dependency of the Treasury, whose representative presides over it.

This entity has as objectives the planning, control and supervision of games of chance, of the activities of natural or legal persons dedicated to their exploitation, as well as the interjurisdictional relations emerging from the activities of the field.

Some of its functions and powers are to prepare the bidding rules and conditions for the bids for the granting of concessions for games of chance, to calculate the tax rates and to propose to the Executive the appointment of officials of the Commission.

In one of his first official activities, Ortiz Báez met with the president of the Ibero-American Corporation of State Lotteries and Bets (Cibelae), Luis Gama.
