FORUM IN RIO

Jurists defend eSport as a sport and talk about regulation in Brazil

According to the Rio eSports Forum schedule, which took place last Friday (27), the event can be divided in two distinct moments: the one of the lawyers in the morning, and the other of professionals related to gamers in the afternoon. The Forum was the coalition of the eSports Triple Propeller, with the academy, private and government gathered for the recognition of the activity as a sport.

During the morning, lawyers, judges and representatives of the sector such as the president of the Federation of the State of Rio de Janeiro of Electronic Sports (FERJEE), Paulo Ribas, defended the recognition of the activity as a sport modality, just like any other traditional, in the panel "eSports is Sport”. During the speeches, they said that eSport must be seen in this way both before the law and in the popular consensus, and therefore, the area itself must seek its legitimation, just as it is being done in the forum itself.

Later, the "eSports is Right" panel took place, with the lawyers discussing the legal relationships of athletes, their teams, the leagues and even about future regulations, such as the one under way in the Senate, and was recently approved by the Commission on Science and Technology.

An issue that was raised by the lawyer specialized in Sports Law, Luciana Lopes da Costa, and that sounded very interesting for those present was the creation of a Special Court, with specialized people, to resolve the litigation of eSport, before they arrive the de facto ways of the Federal Court. In this way, the parties involved would avoid more problems, the agility would be better, and an important novelty: the accused would have the chance of defense, something that ends up not happening several times.

In the afternoon, with the continuation of the schedule, the panel "eSports is News" debated about the role of the press. Composed by Barbara Gutierrez, Jairo Junior, Julia Garcia, Dr. Maureen Flores and Rodrigo Guerra, the panel talked about subjects to educate the public, the press responsibilities on delivering information and the importance of investigative journalism in eSport. Julia Garcia cited the indirect influence the press has on making things happen. Dr. Maureen warned and reminded about the chance that everyone involved with eSports has, to consolidate a rich and highly democratic market.

In the "eSports is Business" and "eSports is Global" panels, with the participation of specialists and personalities directly linked to the biggest clubs, events and agencies related with eSports, the debates were focused on the professionalization of the market and the results that are already visible activations made by supporters and sponsors at events, teams, athletes, and eSports influencers.

There is no denying that one of the main words of the electronic sports ecosystem today is PROFESSIONALISM. Therefore, it was very important the participation of so many qualified jurists participating in the forum held last week in Rio de Janeiro for the activity.
