Three out of ten Brazilians to participate in private betting groups in the World Cup

Three out of ten people in Brazil intend to participate in private betting groups during the 2018 World Cup. The survey was conducted by the GuiaBolso finance platform among 1,045 respondents. The survey also simulated the profit if the value, instead of being bet, was invested. Brazil played its first game yesterday (17th) against Switzerland.

Most people (71.9%) want to spend up to US$ 15 per betting group, but there are also those who will shell out more. And although almost half (46.6%) bet on only in one group, the more excited will play in two (24%), three (10.6%) or even more (18.8%).

Of the total interviewees, 78.5% will bet in favor and 21.5% against Brazil in the championship.

The research also raised another hypothesis: if instead of betting, consumers invested the same amount, what would be the profit? A simulation of GuiaBolso shows that if a person took R$ 100 (US$27) every month and invested in something conservative, such as a public bond or fixed income funds (net profitability of 0.6% per month), in four years he would have accumulated little more of R$ 5,000 (US$ 1,340).

With R$ 200 (US$54) every month, the value multiplies and reaches almost R$ 11,000 (US$2,950), enough value to pay, for example, a part of the trip of the next Cup and watch the games live. If the chosen investment were a little more profitable, such as a private fixed income, the R$ 200 $ 200 (US$54) monthly becomes more than R$ 12,000 (US$3,215) in four years.

"When you participate in this private betting groups and sometimes even in investments, the human being seeks to make a sure bet or very profitable one. But generally the regularity of the economy and investment ends up being more efficient to build a reserve and equity," says the CEO of GuiaBolso, Thiago Alvarez.

Among those who will not participate in bettings, one in four people wants to save money. Other reasons related to the sport, such as not following football, not liking the World Cup or not knowing how to choose the results also appear in the group of people who prefer to stay out of the private betting groups. "If someone wants to save money he has already taken a first step that is to resist the impulse to spend. Now it needs to create a regularity on his economy and start applying," says Thiago.
