Uruguay to block 23 sports betting sites that operate illegally

The National Department of Lotteries and Quinielas (DNLQ) of Uruguay reported that along with the Communications Services Regulatory Unit (URSEC) will block in the coming days 23 websites that operate sports betting illegally in the country. The new blockades are added to the 40 ones that both government agencies have made until June 2018.

The head of the DNLQ, Luis Gama, signed a new resolution - the third in his management at the head of the agency - to block 23 gambling websites that offered their services to Uruguayan residents illegally. "I estimate that for this weekend these 23 pages will be added to the 40 ones that we have already blocked,” he said.

The purpose of this measure is to strengthen the legal offer and boost the growth of Supermatch, the only authorized sports betting website in the country, which in June grew by 30 percent compared to May of this year. Although the official figures for the month of July are still unknown, the DNLQ estimates that they will exceed the 194 million Uruguayan pesos (US$ 6.3mn) wagered in June.

In a dialogue with GI Español last month, Gama reported: "The first stage is to proceed with the blockade of all those sites that do not have authorization to operate in our country, and after that we will analyze if the size of the market merits granting some more license."

In recent days, the candidate for president of the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF), Eduardo Abulafia, proposed carrying out a "structural transformation" in football and revealed that one of his proposals is to implement a new sports betting game in collaboration with the DNLQ.

However, Gama said: "Before embarking on something new, I would choose to improve what we already have and see that results."
