The 'resort casinos' and the future of Bahia in Brazil

A bill drafted in the Senate provides for the release of gambling and the establishment of operating licenses for large 'resort casinos', according to the population in each state. In Bahia, according to this scheme, the Brazilian state could open two big casinos. But there are those who say there is room for more. For this, it is necessary that gaming be released in the country, which may be close to happen.

The sociological movement pointing to the end of the ban on gambling is rooted in a combination of factors. Online gaming is one of the most important. Currently, any Brazilian can access an online casino from their computer or mobile phone and bet on real casino games with real money prizes. With these conditions, the prohibition of games becomes quite anachronistic.

In addition, the society has been giving various signals with indications like those given by Paraná Polls, with its poll earlier this year pointing to a 50-50 draw in the opinions against and in favor of the release of casinos.

And it is also the fact that a number of right-wing politicians are 'giving up' the fight against casinos, and in a country like Brazil, this has been a heavy defeat for defenders of the ban. Presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro says that he is "against, but we'll see what is the best way out," clearly opening the door to the release of the activity. And the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Marcelo Crivella, has been meeting with businessmen from Las Vegas to discuss "real estate investment."

Locations already pointed out in Bahia?

There are several, of course, because the big entrepreneurs know that this race begins long before the green flag is given. Salvador, Chapada Diamantina, Porto Seguro and Costa do Sauípe are the "candidates" that have been most talked about.

Competition is very important, but it is worth asking if there is no place also for a casino in the Southwest of the state

If the intention is to attract tourists and promote economic development, the Southwest could deserve special attention. Here it is important to pay attention to the movement that happened in Tocantins. Candidate for Governor Ronaldo Dimas took an earlier idea of creating the so called "Las Vegas do Cerrado": a special area dedicated to the promotion of gambling and other entertainment industries. The justified objective would be to develop an economically limited region using gambling as a tool - just like Las Vegas and the Nevada desert, a much poorer American state than its neighbor California.

If the bill moves forward, would there be no room for a “bahiana” Las Vegas in the southwest of the sate?
